Running, Vacation, and Turtles

Happy Monday! I just got back from a week of vacation and so rolling out of bed this morning was not easy. I had a wonderfully relaxing time. Sleeping, eating, floating on the lake, waterskiing, playing with my niece and nephew, having good conversations with family, meeting new people, time with my hubby, and getting upgraded to First Class on my flight home. All good. All fun. All on vacation. One of the things I loved were my runs while away. I have been thinking about running a 1/2 marathon. Currently I am running 6-8 miles a day. On the treadmill. While reading. It makes me a bit apprehensive when I have no choice but to run outside. What will it be like? Will I be able to handle just listening to music, and not reading while I run? I was happily surprised this time. I never stopped. I never got tired. I ran mostly 7 miles a day, with hills, 90 degree temperatures plus humidity.

What made me do it? My Nike+ app. The Nike+ app lets you listen to music while running, tracks your run, and talks to you when you hit each mile marker. I know. I know. It is a simple thing an app can do. I just have never used it. It changed my run. The app told me how fast I was going and how far I had gone and knowing that pushed me to run harder and faster. Last summer without the app, I found I would randomly walk, or feel tired. This time having the ability to compete against myself meant I ran better. Thank you, Nike.

These are the turtles I found in the middle of the road during my run. On my second loop they were not to be found and no smooshed turtle either, so they had crossed the road unharmed. So grateful for my runs, my view, my music, and my Nike+ app!

Are You “Drop Dead Healthy?”

I just finished reading the book: “Drop Dead Healthy: One Man’s Humble Quest for Bodily Perfection” by Esquire editor, A.J. Jacobs. I was intrigued about the book when I read a quick soundbite from A.J himself in Shelf Awareness about his new book. He takes two years to make his body healthy, one body part at a time. Here is the soundbite from Shelf Awareness:

Writing at .7 MPH

I predict that this essay will take a bit less than a mile and a bit more than 90 calories to write.

To explain: I’m writing this piece while strolling on my treadmill. As part of my new book, Drop Dead Healthy, which chronicles my quest to be as healthy as humanly possible, I joined the small but growing club of treadmill desk devotees. I perch my laptop (a bit precariously, I must admit) on top of my treadmill’s display panel, and tap tap tap away as I walk at a molasses-like .7 miles per hour.

I do this because of the alarming number of studies that say that extended sitting is terrible for your heart. As in eating-Paula-Deen-bacon-doughnuts terrible. At first, I thought treadmill writing would be distracting. But it’s actually easy (and believe me, I am far from coordinated). It’s also strangely energizing: walking raises your brain’s serotonin level, which helps with focus. I can’t yet tell if my walking is affecting my writing. Do these sentences feel more kinetic? I’ll leave that for you to judge.”

For those of you that work from home or telecommute, let me know if you rig a treadmill desk and if it makes you feel more focused, that you accomplish more and if it was worth the effort. One excerpt from his book (again broken down with each chapter on a different body part), was on his nose, he talks about snoring and how it is taking over marriages. For many snoring can be because of your nasal passages, your weight, and multiple other issues. I found this quote to be interesting information:

“A couple of months ago, The New York Times ran an article about separate-at-night couples. We’re part of the trend. A survey by the National Association of Home Builders says 60 percent of custom homes will have dual master bedrooms by 2015.” page 259

Who knew snoring had such an effect on families that it is changing the way homes are being built! You will find many more interesting details on health in his book. He does not side with the über organics or the sugar fiends. He tries it all and finds what feels right for him. A.J. Jacobs has written a few books and he does not just write them. He lives them. In his book: “A Year of Living Biblically,” he spent a year attempting to live every rule in the Bible literally. Another book called: “The Know-It-All” where he takes a year to read the Encyclopedia from A-Z. You can read more about his books on his website.

I highly recommend “Drop Dead Healthy.” It is a quick read, sprinkled with witty humor, and contains interesting information about health that you might want to look into for yourself.

Working Out While Working

What is the first thing you do when you come home from work? What do you do to decompress from the work day? I usually like to check in with my husband about his day and tell him things about my day. Then, I try to immediately go for my daily run. I can be completely exhausted mentally and physically and 99% of the time if I go for a run I get rejuvenated and can accomplish much more for the rest of my evening.

In my last job I worked from home and often felt like I needed to run double the amount because I was constantly on my laptop or on the phone and I wished I had the option to move around more during my day. I often felt tethered to my laptop. Fast forward to this article I read recently about a treadmill desk. If I had one of these when I was working from home, I could see myself working away, and run/walk at a slower than normal pace for a longer period of time to have the option to move while working. I think a lot of people (if you can handle the treadmill) would appreciate this type of multi-tasking. It would also mean that a lot of us are staying fit while juggling a lot of other responsibilities.

It is massive and not the most attractive of machines, but to me the ROI could be high. To think that maybe on those crazy days when you do not have time for a workout, but you are listening in on a conference call, or you need to read over proposals and the like that you could have stay fit in the process. It sounds like a win-win situation to me!

“I Just Want To Play Ball”

Nike truly is amazing at marketing to their consumers. This past weekend Nike launched a new video that will air on NBC, ABC Family and ESPN through July 26. It is called “Voices” or I have also referred to it as: “I Just Want to Play Ball.” It features: Marlen Esparza – Olympic Boxer, Diana Taurasi – Professional Basketball Player, Joan Benoit Samuelson – Olympic Marathoner, and Lisa Leslie – Professional Basketball Player.

After my post last Friday on Title IX this video is so very appropriate and brought tears to my eyes. It is effective at hitting the emotion of a woman. My favorites lines are:

“People are not used to women being so passionate.”

“I’m a girl. It doesn’t mean that I have to wear a skirt.”

I also wanted to share this article about women in Saudi Arabia being allowed to compete in the Olympics. This is a long time coming, and I am so grateful it has come to fruition.

So, thank you again, Nike, for making us think differently about women and girls. I will leave you today with the words of Joan: “I am fifty-five years old, and I run close to 70 miles a week.” Even if I am not doing 70 miles a week, I hope to still be running.

40 Years of Title IX

1972. It should be called the year of the woman. The first woman to run the Boston Marathon, Ms. magazine launches, and legislation passed for Title IX. Tomorrow, June 23rd, marks the day, 40 years ago when a law was passed that created equal access to sports for girls.

I was not always active in sports growing up. I ran cross country in middle school, and played softball in high school. I was also a cheerleader in high school, but I was never a hard core athlete. I do more now then I ever did as a kid. However, without Title IX, I might not have even had those opportunities.

Think of all the badass women athletes that would not be where they are today if Title IX had not been passed as legislation? Famous athletes, your best friend, or your next door neighbor.
